You open the fridge and the air feels wrong. The milk is not cold, and the freezer might still be frozen. Do not panic yet. Many cooling problems have simple causes, and a few quick checks can save you a service call or give a technician the clues they need.
Always put safety first. Unplug the fridge before you touch the coils or fan, and never use sharp tools near the cooling lines. If food is at risk, call (972) 449-9527 for emergency help.
Quick answer
- Check the temperature setting, the door seal and the vents first.
- Dirty coils and a blocked fan are common causes.
- If food is warm, move it to a cooler and call for help.
1. Check the temperature setting
Someone may have bumped the dial. The fridge should be at or below 40 degrees, and the freezer at about 0 degrees.
2. Make sure the doors close
A door that does not seal lets warm air in. Check for food blocking the door. Try the dollar bill test. Close a bill in the door. If it slides out easily, the seal may be worn.
3. Look at the vents
Cold air moves through vents between the freezer and fridge. If food blocks them, air cannot flow. Move items so air can circulate.
4. Clean the condenser coils
Dust on the coils makes the fridge work harder. Unplug the fridge first. Then vacuum the coils, which are on the back or under the front grille.
5. Listen for the fans
Two fans keep your fridge cold. If you hear nothing or loud rattling, a fan may have failed or hit ice.
6. Check for a recent power cut
After an outage, it can take hours for a fridge to cool again. If it stays warm after that, something may be wrong.
7. Do not overload it
A packed fridge blocks airflow. Leave some space between items.
Why the freezer can work while the fridge is warm
Most fridges make cold air in the freezer, and a fan pushes some of that air into the fridge section. If the fan or a small air door fails, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms. This is one of the most common service calls we see.
Common parts that fail, in plain words
- Condenser coils: release heat. Dust makes them work harder.
- Evaporator fan: moves cold air inside the fridge.
- Defrost heater and timer: melt frost so air can flow.
- Thermostat or sensor: tells the fridge when to cool.
- Door gasket: the seal around the door.
- Start relay: helps the compressor start.
- Compressor: the main cooling pump. Problems here are more serious.
What not to do
- Do not keep opening the door to check.
- Do not unplug and plug it in again and again.
- Do not use a sharp tool to chip ice.
- Do not ignore water on the floor.
- Do not wait for food to spoil.
Water and ice dispensers
If your fridge has a dispenser, a leak or frozen line can also cause cooling and ice problems. See our pages on ice maker repair and brands we repair.
8. Note what the freezer does
If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, cold air may not be moving into the fridge. A stuck damper or a failed fan is common. Tell your technician.
